Tour Route

Leh- Sabu- Digar- Chumik Yokma- Khyema- Tangyar- Jukthey- Rale-Durbuk

Tour Program

Day 1 : Leh to Sabu, 4 hrs.
Start directly from Leh (3.500 m) and walk via a small pass (3.800 m) to Sabu. In Sabu you can visit a bigger and a small monastery. Then continue towards the upper end of Sabu. As Sabu is quite a big village, it takes some time, but you're rewarded with many glimpses of village life. Camp at 3.850 m

Day 2 : Trek Sabu to Digar-la Base Camp, 4-5 hrs.
Cross the bridge to the left and follow the stream upwards. There is a path, sometimes crossed by smaller animal trails. There are many possibilities of resting at the water and enjoy the view towards the Stok Range. On 4.900 m a small plateau is reached with two valleys leading into the mountains. Pitch your tent at this beautiful place

Day 3 : Trek Digar-la Base Camp to Chumik Yogma, 6,5 - 7 hrs.
The right valley is yours. Climb up while following the stream, but don't miss the Zig-zag-path towards the left leading to the pass. It takes quite some time to get up to the pass which appears closer then it is. But the view is always great and getting with every step more spectacular. Digar-la is 5.435 m high and offers great views to North and South. The walk down along the river goes slowly via many miniplateaus. There are many possibilities of pitching the tent – Chumik Yogma is  a very beautiful one. Sleep on an altitude of 4.780 m.

Day 4 : Trek Chumik Yogma to Khyema, 7 hrs.
Going down one of the most beautiful high altitude valleys of Ladakh. Quite broad it offers great views to the opposite mountain range while descending slowly mostly on green gras along the river. See Dzos and maybe some Yaks grazing, marmots peeping out of their holes and listen to the singing of birds. After 1,5 to 2 hours you spot the wide spread fields of Digar village. Digar is approx. 4.000 m high. The small Gompa is not always open and you have to search for someone with the key. When looking to the west, you can spot Tangyar and the valley leading towards Nebuk-la. Down to Kungru is a road with nearly no cars, but there are lots of short-cuts to go. In Kungru on 3.630 m walk up the not-tared road to the most beautiful located village of Khyema at 4.140 m.

Day 5 : Khyema to Tangyar, 6 hrs.
From Khyema you have to climb on a Zig-Zag-Path to the Khyema-la pass (4.620 m) and walk down the trail to the road. Follow it down to Tangyar. Unfortunatly there is this approx. 3 km road to walk, which leads to the Wari-la, but it is very very few cars to drive there, so it is not too bad. The beautiful scenery and the encounters with the locals in this quite rare visited villages add to the pleasure in visiting the western part of Nubra Valley. Tangyar has a spectacular located small monastery and has beautiful old houses nestled at the foot of it. Camp on a meadow on 3.870 m.

Day 6 : Trek Tangyar to Jukthey, 5-6 hrs.
To find the path out of the village is a little tricky, but just keep up the river and take the left path of it when reaching the bridge. And then walk just up, up and up until the reached the beautiful camp of Jukthey at 4.930 m with a small spring. When looking back you can spot Digar and the way you have already trekked.

Day 7: Jukthey to Rale, 7 hrs.
Trek up to the side-valley on the right and continue until you find the start of a zig-zag-path (not so easy to spot – watch out for stone piles) leading to the pass. The Nebuk-la is quite broad at an altitude of 5.385 m and offers great views to the spectacular scenery back and in front of you. Walk down the valley and follow the river on the left side on an obvious path. It leads towards another valley to the right. Close to the junction you find a small Doksa (shepherds hut). From here to Rale it is possible to walk on both sides of the river. Pitch your tent on 4.415 m a little before reaching Rale.

Day 8: Rale to Durbuk (Zanmo raod), 4 hrs.
Take your time walking through Rale, maybe visit the small village government school, have a chat with the villagers – it is a nice located place with people being involved in farming and husbandry. Continue the path on the right river-side, reach a small pass at 4.050 m, spot some old petroglyphs and walk down to meet people working on a road to Rale. In 2014 it was far from being accomplished. Down to Zanmo it is dusty, but OK to walk – in Zanmo better to ask the car to get you from there as the 4 km tared road to Durbuk are not really pleasant through military area.
In Durbuk you could head for a nice hot shower in the nearby hotel in Tangtse or you continue directly to the Pangong lake. Or, if time is too limited, just head back to Leh via the Chang-la.

See what our Customers say about Leh- Sabu- Tangyar- Durbuk

I have travelled with teams of Overland Escape on 6 occasions now and every single time the experience was wholeheartedly positive. On two occasions, Tundup organised lengthy treks through remote parts of Ladakh, Zanskar and Nubra and his organisation was absolutely reliable and spot on on every occasion. The trekking teams we travelled with were excellent, the food outstanding and the support available whenever it was needed. We were trekking during the floods in Summer 2010 in Zanskar and Changtang, and were, ultimately, the only trekking group that reached Tso Moriri during the middle of August, in the week just after the flooding. This was due to the competence of our guide, Namgyal, who changed our route to enable us to proceed, who knew exactly where to cross the swollen rivers and who kept us completely safe at all times. On 4 occasions, Overland Escape organised Easter expeditions through the Markha Valley for relatively large school groups. This, of course, needed extraordinarily good organisation, and on each occasion, this was exactly what we got. Not only were all timings kept and all information was relevant and 100% reliable, the trekking teams Tundup organised for us, were amongst the best teams I have ever travelled with. In particular, Namgyal is in all likelihood the best guide I have ever trekked with. His knowledge of the region, its culture and wildlife is outstanding, and he is also an excellent travel companion. He can empathise with and enthuse adults and youngsters to the same degree. Overland Escape certainly is one of the best trekking outfits I have come across in the Himalayas or indeed anywhere in the world (I have also trekked in Nepal, Tibet, Pakistan, Peru and Jordan). I would wholeheartedly recommend travelling with this organisation.

"Tundup, have really a sixth sense...his associate in Manali (Kuram) is really a good man...a really good man where you can trust and give the full faith for everything. As already said, Tundup, know very well how to choice his partners. Concerning the driver choose by Kuram for the transfer from Manali to Dharmasala and then to Amritsar...he was a very good professional driver. All of us were surprise to find out in India a special driver, very professional, very polite...typical western style driver. Few words, always agree for everything, never complain and at the end he wanted to refuse our tips and we forced him to have it. I don't know if this choice has been affected by Tundup or by Kuram...but in any case...compliments to all of you. Now we are here into our house, very sad...our holiday has finished so quickly that we didn't realize. Everything has gone well, everything perfect. We'll be always in debit with Tundup for his great service and we really hope to see him again in a close future for another trekking. Thanks again for all, thanks for your book guide and for your full assistance."
