A day visit to Shanti Stupa, That too without having any prior notice, but it was worth the walk, talk, and seen dogs stalking us at the back, but everything is looking really lively, and Shanti Stupa stood at the peak of mountain which actually covers almost all the area of Leh once we made to the top of that hill.

So today, suddenly I decided to visit Shanti Stupa along with one of my mentor. So, we started our journey from Skara Yogma, and to visit our destination, we have seen temples where people hold fast for a day, Indian army camp, mess, army gym, Durga Temple, along with that we have witness so many local houses and guest house at the periphery of the road. It is indeed a pleasurable walk on the ashy road which leads not only to Shanti Stupa, but a view of livelihood of common people and army camp. To actually visit the stupa, we have two choices, either to walk short cut or continue with the road. We decided to go by taxi, so by taxi we have seen so many hotels and restaurant (Druk hotel, Siachen hotel, Shangri-La hotel and many more). And finally we reached Silent and peaceful Shanti Stupa.

Once reaching there we entered the monastery, and it consist the statues of Buddha and images of Dalai Lama, Late Bakula Rinpoche, and many other images of Japanese monk. On the right side of the wall we have seen a huge Tibetan Thanka depicting twelve cycle of life. After that we circumambulate the Stupa, it is indeed very huge, crafted with 108 images of Buddha. This number 108 is also a very crucial thing in Buddhism, we light a lamp of 108, and we use 108 piece of rosary to chant mantra, so basically it is about giving habit to you. So in Buddhism one must have the habits of goodliness such as, giving alms, practice compassion, and abstaining from bad habits such as alcohol, lies and all sorts of delusion. So the image that crafted is basically giving a view on what Buddha hood means.

A brief history of Shanti Stupa is that, on the second visit to Ladakh in 1980, the Bhikshu Gyomyo Nakamura of Japan had conceived the Ladakh Shanti Stupa. The famed ethos of peace and tolerance was at once appreciated by Late Kushok Bakula Rinpoche and on the bases of that, the Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA), with the District administration, identified several spots in and around Leh to build this Stupa. At last Bhikshu Gyomyo has selected the hillock in Chanspa which provides the best point for views and environment of Leh. After that he went to seek permission and blessings from his Guru Most Ven Fujii and begins his project from 1982. The cost of the stupa is provided with the funds from Buddhist in Japan and all over the world, and free labour was provided by the local people of Ladakh. The land purification was held in the presence of Late Bakula Rinpoche and the foundation stone for the stupa was laid by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, on August 25, 1985, on which day the temple was also opened by him. The statue, on completion, was inaugurated by Kushok Thiksay Rinpoche on August 1991.

After that we entered meditation centre and there we stayed for 15 minutes. In this temple we saw a huge statue of Buddha, it is so peaceful, one must come here to get rid of monotonous household works and hustle bustle work life. It is a retreat to your long lost peaceful soul. Now the view you get is amazingly beautiful. Just like on a cliff, you would witness the bird eye view of everything down there. We have seen Leh main market, Stok and Matho Village, Leh Palace, Indus River, Khardungla Pass, and army camp. Eventually, it has provided us basic information’s and a glimpse of faraway places. Hence, with satisfaction we get down by choosing the stairs that seems endless. They are literally so many, but somehow we manage to get down, because we never get the time to consider the restlessness due to the scenic view of Leh that is dissolving each time while we are getting nearer to the ground level. ;We were blissful on return and immersed in discussion on emotions, perceptions and rasa….Shall explain those in my next blog…keep reading
Ladakh, the land dances between mountains and Lake
There is no better escape than a place dances between mountains and lake. When the weather becomes better, neither too hot nor too cold and local life becomes livelier and energized with blooming greeneries. Another chapter, another year of tourism is now growing day by day. With the changing weather, unlike other places you will see another phase of life in Ladakh, as the road to Leh has opened from Srinagar and Manali, the snow dissolves paving its way to the truck carrying vegetables and fruits for the people awaited whole winter for fresh eatables. There you can see people yet again on road. Those who adore views will definitely choose by road to reach Ladakh, there you have so much to receive and capture in your digital life. The running water, the herding of livestock animal and the peoples greeting you with their sweet gesture. That’s the reason why we feel home away from home, even the slightest things whilst your travel becomes a part of you in the days of your life in future. For you shall be travelling to the place you have never been before and meeting peoples you have never met before and fall in love with the differences and celebrate the uniqueness. I would suggest choosing Manali road for the photographers, the landscape over there is much more captivating and beautiful.
For the month of May, you will see tourist started coming. The major source of attraction is obviously the view you would be seeing during your tour, but the sole purpose is for you to get retreat, the taste of Ladakh through its food, traditional wear and the monasteries. Although, by air your journey is much shorter and comfortable, but by road the journey will be much longer and you will get plenty of inspiring views and little did we all know what holds during the course of our travel. There are two ways to reach Ladakh by Road, The Jammu and Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation operates regular Deluxe and ordinary bus services from Srinagar to Leh. The Himachal Road Transport Corporation operates services between Delhi and Leh via Manali Road and daily services between Manali and Leh. Manali Privates Bus union also operates daily bus services between Manali and Leh, which takes two days to reach Leh after night halt at Sarchu or Darcha. Apart from the bus services you can book a taxi sharing with other travellers to reach your destination. That way you will reach according to your own wish. You can enjoy the ride alongside the view and knowledge you get from the driver about the places you would be seeing whilst in the taxi.
